Coaching Philosophy

I documented my coaching philosophy for a coaching license course I took in June 2013. I just happened to come upon it and I was amazed at how it still rings true today. I just thought I would share it and would highly encourage every youth sports coach to document their philosophy. It serves as a great guide and you can share it with your parents. Enjoy.

Coaching Philosophy

We believe in developing players through instruction in fundamental techniques and understanding of the game to improve individual skill and confidence. We will encourage teamwork, respect, and 100% effort in practice and in games regardless of the outcome.

Player Development Goals

Player development is at the core of the above coaching philosophy. It is recognized that players need to understand basic techniques in order to develop in the game of soccer. As coaches, the development of players will be measured through the progression of players through the season in the areas of ball control, passing, positioning, and knowledge of the game. It is recognized that not all players in the U9/U10 girls age group are at the same level in regards to soccer intelligence (SQ), so that is why the fundamental techniques of the game are incorporated in each practice in order for players to observe individual progression and progression of the individuals into a team.

Core Coaching Values

A fundamental part of coaching at the U9/U10 age level is to ensure that players enjoy playing soccer. Core coaching values and player development goals go hand-in-hand to teach players how to play the game while making it enjoyable. The only way for players to have strong development goals that translate into an effective, positive experience is for the coaching staff to have core values. In order to instruct players on fundamental techniques, the players must recognize that they are a part of a team and the team functions together; must show respect for the game, coaches, teammates, opponents, referees, and spectators; and give the effort in practices and games to achieve development goals.

Player Expectations

Players are expected to give 100% effort in practices and games. One hundred percent effort does not mean that each player must run hard at all times and perform at game pace in everything they do, but it means that each player consistently demonstrates a willingness to improve in areas of weakness and strength. In order to accomplish continual improvement in player development, players are expected to attend practices and games on a consistent basis and actively listen to instructions and apply those instructions to optimize development.

Parent Expectations

Player development goals and core coaching values will not be effective without the parents’ active participation in their player’s development. Parents are not expected to participate in practices to optimize their player’s development, but perform simple tasks such as ensuring the player comes consistently to practices and games; actively reiterate or inquire about practices; work with their players on their strengths and weaknesses, and communicate with the coaches to ensure everyone is on the same page concerning player development.
